Saturdays Off the 405
A FREE outdoor performance series

Fridays Off the 405 are now Saturdays Off the 405! Enjoy outdoor music and evening views of the city and drink in the refreshing summer exhibitions in a casual and spontaneous atmosphere.

The evenings feature performances by your soon-to-be favorite bands, along with DJ sets to open and close the night. Plus, free spotlight talks offer bite-sized mini tours of the galleries.

A cash bar is stocked with Getty-tinis and more, and the Garden Terrace Cafe offers sandwiches, salads, and other nibbles (both until 8:30 p.m.)

The series resumes in May 2010.

Chairlift

Saturday, June 20, 2009 | 6:00–9:00 p.m.

Kicking off the new night was Brooklyn-based trio Chairlift, said to be "just as at home in a David Lynch film as in the aisles of a supermarket." Chairlift's unique blend of synth-pop made their single "Bruises" a hit (you might have heard it in a recent iPod nano ad).

Band members Aaron Pfenning, Caroline Polachek, and Patrick Wimberly wove together keyboards, guitar, bass, drums, and some killer tambourine to perform songs from their debut album Does You Inspire You—and whatever else inspired them.

Mas Exitos

Saturday, July 11, 2009 | 6:00–9:00 p.m.

Mas Exitos, the legendary twice-a-month event held at the Verdugo Bar in Highland Park, came to the Getty! The DJ collective—featuring Lengua, Hoseh, Ganas, and Enorbito—unfolded their international music selections and transformed the Museum Courtyard into a hot spot south of the border.

They offered an audio carpet ride from the Andes of Peru to the streets of Mexico City to the East Side of L.A.—cumbias, low-rider music, Afro beat, tropicalia, funky jazz oddities, y más. DJ Lengua handled the laptop while the rest of the crew took over the turntables.

Also performing: Domingo Siete
This pan-Latin-and-Caribbean quartet, which plays at home in L.A. when not touring Europe, scored the Oscar-nominated documentary The Garden.

Cut Chemist

Saturday, July 25, 2009 | 6:00–9:00 p.m.

Celebrated DJ Cut Chemist took to the decks to create an audio feast featuring vocalist Hymnal with video by Cinefamily's VJ Pimpadelic Wonderland. Cut Chemist—a.k.a. Lucas MacFadden—is an L.A. native who was a founding member of both the rap/hip-hop group Jurassic Five and the Latin funk outfit Ozomatli. He plays music and rhythms from around the world while keeping strong the hip-hop tradition.

Also performing: We Are the World
The choreographed performances of Echo Park's energetic dance-collective-slash-avant-garde band tend toward the exuberant and unpredictable.

The Dodos

Saturday, August 8, 2009 | 6:00–9:00 p.m.

The Dodos created an energetic sound with guitar and drums—music that perfectly complemented a summer night outdoors at Saturdays Off the 405.

The band features the acoustic artistry of Meric Long, who launched his career gigging around San Francisco playing folky guitar with a combination of loops, ambient keyboards, West African Ewe drumming, and country-blues fingerpicking, and drummer Logan Kroeber, who came out of progressive metal. Their psych-folk sound has been described as "joyously taut indie-rock" reminiscent of the Violent Femmes, Clinic, and Roxy Music.

Rain Machine with Kyp Malone

Saturday, September 26, 2009 | 6:00–9:00 p.m.

Kyp Malone brought his much-anticipated solo project, Rain Machine, to Saturdays Off the 405. His new work is unflinchingly original, mixing elements of modern jazz, bluegrass, and blistering guitar-driven rock into a refreshing new sound. Defiantly personal, Rain Machine is the sound of an extraordinary artist emerging into his own.

Dent May

Saturday, October 10, 2009 | 6:00–9:00 p.m.

Dent May's unique vocal style—part crooner, part falsetto, and all showman—reflects the influences of some of his favorite singers (Prince, Serge Gainsbourg, and Lee Hazlewood, to name a few). His love of various song styles results in an infectiously enjoyable combination of ukulele, drums, pedal steel, violin, horns, and bass. One second his songs hint at Brazilian Tropicalia, the next at a '50s barbershop quartet or an early-20th-century country swing.

Also performing: L.A.'s own DJ Nobody took the stage as part of dublab's 10th anniversary celebration, making the last Saturdays Off the 405 of 2009 a not-to-be-missed event.
