Art critic Edward Goldman introduces Aleksandr Sokurov's film Russian Ark (2002, 96 min.) and offers a few special surprises to help illuminate the film.

About Russian Ark
Two thousand actors—and the spectacular art treasures of the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia—are the cast for this pioneering film. Director Aleksandr Sokurov takes us through the Hermitage's galleries and private chambers in one single, fluid shot, staging a series of vignettes that introduce us to Catherine the Great and other figures from Russian history. The film culminates in a spectacular ballroom scene of magnificent costumes and grand pageantry.

About Edward Goldman
Edward Goldman is an art critic and consultant and the longtime host of KCRW's Art Talk. He worked in the education department of the Hermitage for nine years before immigrating to the United States from the Soviet Union in 1977.
