This film series at the Getty Villa pairs two masterpieces of stop-motion animation by filmmaker Ray Harryhausen that have, for decades, introduced young people to the myths and legends of the ancient world. Experience some of Harryhausen's greatest creations: Jason and Medea, Hercules and Pegasus, Perseus and Medusa, and the countless gods, goddesses, demons, and monsters that populate his timeless Technicolor adventure fantasies.
Continue your exploration in the galleries to see the winged horse Pegasus, who plays a critical role in the myth explored in the exhibition The Chimaera of Arezzo (on view July 16, 2009–February 8, 2010). And don't miss dazzling gold objects from the ancient kingdom of Colchis, home of the legendary Golden Fleece, in the exhibition The Golden Graves of Ancient Vani (on view July 16–October 5, 2009).

Skeletons! Harpies! A seven-headed scaly monster! Special effects wizard Ray Harryhausen works his stop-motion animation magic in the tale of Jason and his band of heroes on their voyage to Colchis—site of the ancient capital of Vani—seeking the Golden Fleece that will win Jason the throne of Thessaly.
The young Greek warriors battle a giant statue come to life, fiendish clashing rocks, and an army of skeletons. Don't miss one of the great early special-effects masterpieces, a rousing family adventure with a thrilling score by Bernard Herrmann.

Clash of the Titans features a parade of Ray Harryhausen's memorable monsters and creatures—including flying horse Pegasus and the deadly Medusa—as well as a young, scantily clad Harry Hamlin as mythic hero Perseus.
The stop-motion animation was something of a throwback in 1981, four years after the digital effects of Star Wars hit screens—but the film features some of Harryhausen's most thrilling sequences, as well as an unrivaled constellation of British and American stars in cameo roles. Look for Oscar-winner Sir Laurence Olivier as the perfect embodiment of Zeus.
This film includes some partial mythological nudity and swordplay violence; best for children age 10 and up.
