Family Festival

Delve into the natural beauty and epic wonder of California in this daylong festival. Enjoy the music and tales of the 49ers, explore the myths of the Southwest, discover the culture of the Chumash people, and see a fantastically detailed model railroad re-creating old-time California! The day complements the exhibition Dialogue among Giants: Carleton Watkins and the Rise of Photography in California, on view at the Getty Center October 14, 2008–March 1, 2009.

All events are free; no reservations required.

Music and Dance

Goin' South Band—Songs of Early California
The "boys of Goin' South" amaze and inspire listeners of all ages with show-stopping performances on banjo, fiddle, guitars, upright bass, mandolin and jaw harp. Touches of good humor lace this performance that takes you back to early California.

Danza Floricanto—Early California Suite and Waltzes
Founded in 1975 under the direction of Gema Sandoval, Danza Floricanto is the oldest existing professional Mexican folk dance troupe in Southern California. Enjoy a performance of the dance traditions of los Californos, the California ranchers of the late 1700s and early 1800s.

Sihawha'w—Chumash Stories and Songs
Hear songs from the time when the animals were people in this performance featuring Julie Tumamait-Stenslie and her daughters.

Gordy Ohliger—"The Musical Mark Twain" presents "California: A Heritage You Can Hear"
Listen to Gordy Ohliger the Banjo-ologist as he shares quirky history and fun songs on vintage banjos.

Michael Katz—Tales of the Old West
Storyteller Michael Katz pulls us in with a Mexican folktale, a tall tale, and a Chumash legend from the rich cultural landscape of California and the West.

The Orange County Model Railroaders present a 16-by-36-foot modular train layout depicting Southern California in the 1940s.

Art-Making Workshops

Stereoscopes with Marianne Sadowski
Assemble and decorate your own stereoscope made of cardstock, through which you can look at a photograph from the early 19th century. Stereoscopes were popular in the early days of photography as 3-D optical toys.

Daguerrotype Icons with Marcus Kuiland-Nazario
Create your very own Daguerrotype-inspired framed print employing early photo techniques. The sun-print process is used to create photo prints of natural and man-made icons from the early California landscape. The prints are then framed using materials reflecting Daguerrotype-style framing.

Create and Send Your Own Postcard
Create a souvenir of your visit to the Getty Museum using postcards, paintbrush pens, and a variety of stamps. We will mail your postcard anywhere in the world!

Decorate a picture frame using colored paper, markers, and other materials and then use it to display your postcard-size art.
