Migrant Mother / Lange

Teach your students about the Dust Bowl and the Depression, have them create their own photo essays, and learn about using metaphors in visual and written forms. This curriculum, which focuses on Dorothea Lange and her photography, helps students to visualize history and explore their own creativity through art and writing activities.

Lesson Plans were developed with Los Angeles-area teachers and use Lange's photography to teach language arts, history, and studio art to elementary and secondary students.

In the Image Bank you will find photographs used in the lessons with background information and guiding questions for teaching.

Developed in conjunction with an exhibition at the Getty Center from October 15, 2002 through February 9, 2003, these curriculum materials provide the tools you'll need to use Lange's images in your classroom.
