Ghost Dance Movement (American history, 1889-1890)

Note: Spiritual movement that swept from California to Native American communities across the United States, particularly amongst Great Plains tribes. Originated with Wovoka (c. 1856-1932), a Numu spiritual leader; after a series of visions, Wovoka advocated for Native Americans to adopt a round dance to save Native lifeways and end the various conflicts stemming from the Indian Wars (1790-1890). The movement ended swiftly after the Massacre at Wounded Knee, where U.S. police fired on Ghost Dance participants in 1890. Several Native leaders were killed during the conflict, including Hunkpapa Lakota Chief Sitting Bull (1834-1890).
