![]() | Cold War (global event, 1947-1991)
Note: Atmosphere of tension that developed after World War II between the United States and the Soviet Union and their respective allies. The Cold War was waged on political, economic, and propaganda fronts and is so named, because no large-scale combat developed on either side. Although historians debate the dates of the Cold War, the common timeframe is the period between 1947, the year of the Truman Doctrine, which pledged aid to nations threatened by Soviet expansionism., and either 1989, when communism fell in Eastern Europe, or 1991, when the Soviet Union collapsed.
