Record Type: Legendary Place

Ketumati (Buddhist legendary place)

Note: The earthly paradise of Maitreya, the future Buddha. Some identify it as Vārānasi, Uttar Pradesh. Theologically Maitreya's paradise is an important transitional step between the paradises of Amitabha the two Vehicles. This paradise includes idyllic conditions of daily life during the coming of this “future buddha.” Given that images dedicated to Maitreya are more common prior to the 6th century than those devoted to Amitabha, the wish to be reborn in Maitreya's paradise was obviously widespread during the Southern and Northern Dynasties.
