Note: First of three armed conflicts between the British and Afghanistan, in an effort for control of the region, to stave off a perceived competitive threat from Russia, and to restore the rule of exiled leader Shah Shojā'. The result was a British defeat and eventual retreat known as "Auckland's Folly," after Lord Auckland, then governor-general of India's decision to invade. | |
