Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian (Christian iconography)

Note: Narrative or devotional scene of St. Sebastian being or having been shot through with arrows as means of execution. St. Irene discovered that he was not dead, and nursed him back to health. Thus the story was associated with survival of grave injury or illness; he became a patron of those afflicted by plague. Although he was not killed by this attempted execution, but later was beaten to death, the shooting with arrows is the most common iconographical theme associated with Sebastian and is called his "martyrdom."
