| Dormition of the Virgin Mary (Christian iconography) | |
Note: Narrative of the death of the Blessed Virgin, usually depicted with sorrowing apostles standing around a corpse of Mary; Jesus may take her child-like soul, to be assumed into heaven. Nothing is said in the Bible about the end of Mary's life, but a tradition dating back to at least the 5th century says the twelve Apostles were miraculously assembled to witness her death. In later doctrine, she was held to have been assumed coporeally into heaven, thus the death scene is no longer portrayed, or is called a "sleeping" (dormition). | |
