[Gloria d'amore] (etchings (prints); Bianchi, Sebastiano (etcher, died 1738); published 1690; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 561426; (CMalG)1366-954; accession number: P910002** (FF. 607))
Note: Domenico Mauro (or Mauri), a scenographer and theater painter from the Veneto, and his two brothers Gaspare and Pietro, architects, often collaborated on the scenography of spectacles, such as Gloria d'amore, and signed: Li tre fratelli Mauri inuent; Impressions of the etchings were issued with Aurelio Aureli's booklet La gloria d'amore .... (In Parma : Nella stampa ducale, 1690); The etcher Sebastiano Bianchi, whose name appears on the prints, is not well documented; The prints depict the floats of Achelous and Hercules designed for the water ballet and tournament Gloria d'amore which was performed in Parma in 1690 in celebration of the wedding of Prince Odoardo Farnese to Princess Dorotea Sofia di Neuburg; The prows and sterns of the water floats take the shapes of harpies, Cerberus, unicorns, dragons and the garden of the Hesperides. The oarsmen are dressed in exotic or oriental clothing; The prints correspond to fig. 53, 56-58, 60-63, 66 in Cirillo, G. Il trionfo del Barocco a Parma, but prints [1], [8], [9] (cf. fig. 61, 66, 53 in Cirillo) are printed in reverse. Print [3] corresponds to a different state from the one illustrated by Cirillo (fig. 62): it does not display the scroll with a caption; Forms part of the Collection of festival prints, 1530-1887 (Special Collections accn. no. P910002**).
