Artists in ancient Greece often painted animals and mythological creatures on ceramic vessels in order to tell stories. Each creature was important and symbolized something special. The Hippocamp (like a sea-horse) pulled the chariot of the god Poseidon under the sea. The Sphinx terrorized the kingdom of Thebes and devoured all who could not solve its riddle. The goose represented intelligence and determination and was associated with the goddess of love, Aphrodite. Snakes were symbols of healing.
