In antiquity, Roman villas often had elegant mosaic floors with sophisticated designs made of stone materials. Terrazzo was a type of flooring created from an aggregate of tiny pebbles that were combined for their earthy colors. A spectrum of marbles was usually inlaid, which produced colorful patterns. Tiny bits of broken granite and other hard stones were embedded to create swirls and geometric compositions. Some mosaics created optical illusions, while others mirrored or complemented architectural details of the buildings themselves.
Our silk-necktie designs are inspired by mosaic floors from the Men in Antiquity and Women and Children in Antiquity galleries at the Getty Villa.
