The royal bas-reliefs of Abomey in Benin are like pages of a book depicting the landmark events in the life of the Fon people. Using a visual vocabulary rooted in vodou imagery, they are a source of pride and cultural identity, a living
tradition, and a repository of information about the past for this West African nation of five million people.
History Told on Walls is the story of a successful collaboration between the government of Benin and the Getty Conservation Institute to preserve the heavily damaged bas-reliefs that once adorned the Salle des Bijoux, "Hall of Jewels," now a museum and ceremonial center within the royal compound at Abomey.
