One of the most important Italian manuscripts in the Museum's collection, the lavishly illuminated Gualenghi-d'Este Hours was created around 1469, for the occasion of the marriage of diplomat Andrea Gualengo to Orsina d'Este, a member of Ferrara's ruling family. The devotional book features brilliant figural decoration of the suffrages—short prayers to saints—and was painted by Taddeo Crivelli, one of the major manuscript illuminators of the Renaissance.

This volume includes reproductions of all of the illuminations in the book plus selected text pages, each with commentary. The author examines the book's vivid devotional imagery in relation to contemporary works of art that help explain the significance for its fifteenth-century patrons. This beautifully illustrated book was published to coincide with an exhibit of the manuscript and related material at the Getty Museum in 2000.

Kurt Barstow is the former assistant curator of manuscripts at the Getty Museum.
