Warned by an angel that King Herod sought to find and kill the infant Jesus, Joseph and Mary took the child to safety in Egypt, according to a short account in the Gospel of Matthew. Over the centuries, many artists have depicted the Holy Family’s journey to refuge. To celebrate the Museum’s recent acquisition of Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo’s The Punchinello Riding a Camel at the Head of a Caravan, this display showcases three drawings from the permanent collection that reveal creative reflections of this biblical theme.
