Apollo and Artemis from Pompeii: Archaeology, Restoration and Conservation
Exhibition co-curators Erik Risser and David Saunders lead a three-hour investigation into the discovery, history, and conservation of the bronze statues of Apollo and Diana from Pompeii. Themes will include their context in the Temple of Apollo and excavations at Pompeii; historical attitudes toward restoration; and the methods by which the statues were studied during their conservation in the labs at the Getty Villa. Course fee $35; $28 students. Open to 25 participants.

Workshop

Restoring Ancient Bronzes in the Nineteenth Century
This one-day scholarly program considers the wider context of bronze restorations in the nineteenth century, utilizing both archival research and technical analysis. With the Apollo Saettante as a starting point, restoration work in Naples will be of primary interest, but speakers will also consider comparable activities throughout Italy and elsewhere in Europe. Free; preregistration is required and seating is limited.

Exhibition and Experiment: A History of the Royal Bourbon Museum
The collections of the Royal Bourbon Museum—now the National Archaeological Museum in Naples, Italy—were greatly enriched in the 18th and 19th centuries by finds from excavations at Herculaneum and Pompeii. Art historian Andrea Milanese discusses the history of the museum and its evolution as a center for the restoration of antiquities. Free; a ticket is required.

Studio Course

Bronze Sculpture Workshop
Learn the art of lost-wax casting in this three-session workshop. Explore sculpting, mold making, casting, and finishing techniques to create a small medallion cast in bronze. The first session meets at the Getty Villa, and the second and third sessions meet at Decker Studios Fine Arts Foundry in North Hollywood. Course fee $215; $195 students/seniors (includes materials, foundry tour, and bronze casting fees). Open to 15 participants.
