Debord, Guy (French theorist and filmmaker, 1931-1994)
|
Note: French theorist, writer, filmmaker, and provocateur. Founder of the Situationist International, an avant-garde art and literary group active from 1957-1972. Debord was also active with the earlier Lettriste International in Paris, itself founded by Isidore Isou. Debord was known for his radical and unforgiving critiques of culture, and his most well-known work is the book "La Société du Spectacle," first published in 1967. His first public statements were made in the medium of film. His first film, "Hurlements en faveur de Sade" (1952) consisted entirely of alternating black and white leader accompanied by a voiceover by Debord and others. Subsequent films were made using accumulations of found footage, in keeping with the Situationist theory of 'détournement:' using already existing imagistic material as raw material for new works. He committed suicide in 1994. French artist, communications theorist. |
