Record Type: Corporate Body
Situationist International (International art and theory group, active ca. 1957-1972)

Note: Group of avant-garde artists and cultural theorists founded and maintained by Guy Debord, active in several European countries. The Situationist International published a journal, pamphlets and posters advocating their aims, theories, and criticisms. Membership was international and frequently changed, according to the whims of Debord. Originally membership included a large number of visual artists including some members of Cobra, but Situationist critiques of visual art soon narrowed the focus of the group to a kind of political or intellectual activism. This group is often held responsible in some part for the events of May 1968 in Paris and throughout France. The journal published by the group uses the term 'Internationale Situationniste:' the most commonly used term in English language literature is 'Situationist International.'
