Kotěra, Jan (Czech architect, 1871-1923)
|
Note: Considered the father of Czech modern architecture. He studied first at the German Technical School in Plzeň, then with Otto Wagner at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts from 1894-1897. His early projects were characterized by floral motifs and a lyrical sensibility, though in his major works from 1908 to 1913, he renounced this initial decorative tendency in favor of rationalist, functionalist aesthetic and the use of bare brick. He is not associated with the cubism of his students Janák and Gočár, though his last projects show some signs of the cubist influence. He acted as president of the Mánes Association of Plastic Artists, and professor at the Prague School of Applied Arts 1898-1910, and Prague School of Fine Arts from 1911 until his death in 1923. He influenced many Czech modernist architects active in the early 20th century. Czech architect. |
