Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture (French fine arts academy, 1648-1793)
|
Note: French academy of fine arts established in 1648 under Louis XIV, including an art school in Paris and a branch in Rome, the Académie de France. Its aim, which was to advance the professional and social status of it members, signaled a shift in art education from technical instruction to an aesthetic understanding of fine art. As a result, teaching included classes in anatomy, geometry, history, and geography instead of elements of the workshop practice, such as the application of paint. The Académie mounted exhibitions of members' work, the Salons, and was dissolved in 1793. Founded in 1648 during the reign of Louis XIV, merged with the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1793. |
