Black Mountain College (American liberal arts college, active 1933-1957)
|
Note: Black Mountain College was an experimental liberal arts school founded by John Andrew Rice in 1933. First located near Ashville, North Carolina, the college relocated in 1941 to property on the Lake Eden resevoir in that state. The progressive philosophy of Black Mountain was influenced by philosopher John Dewey; there were no grades or credits, and paramount importance was given to the arts. During the 1940s and 1950s, Black Mountain was a gathering spot for luminaries in all areas of the arts, and played a major role in forming an American artistic identity in 20th century. School of the arts founded in 1933 and dissolved in 1957. |
