Sun Ra (American musician, poet, and performer, 1941-1993, born Saturn)
|
Note: American jazz composer, big-band leader, keyboardist, and poet known for his experimental compositions and space-themed philosophy. His Arkestra performances could feature large drum choirs and chants, be-bop and swing pieces. Performances might include singers, dancers, acrobats, films and light shows. He is considered the first to introduce the use of synthesizers to Jazz, as well as the use of other non-traditional instrumentation. The Arkestra, an ensemble with a flexible line-up, and occasionally changing name, has continued since his death. He was a significant figure in the development of the Afrofuturism movement, and claimed to have come from the planet Saturn. |
