San Francisco Art Institute (American art school, founded 1871)
|
Note: A private, non-profit college of contemporary art located on Russian Hill in San Francisco. Founded in 1871 as the San Francisco Art Association. In 1874 the Association launched an art school: the California School of Design. Since 1906 the school has adopted numerous name changes including San Francisco Institute of Art, and the California School of Fine Arts. In 1926 the school relocated to 800 Chestnut Street, where it remains. Diego Rivera painted a mural in the student gallery in 1930. After WWII, faculty included Clyfford Still, Ad Reinhardt, and Mark Rothko. In 1946 Ansel Adams and Minor White began the first fine-art photography department, which included Imogen Cunningham, Edward Weston, and Dorothea Lange and faculty. In 1961 the school became the San Francisco Art Institute. SFAI currently offers degrees in painting, sculpture, printmaking, film, photography, new genres, art and technology, and the history and theory of contemporary art. |
