Note: Photojournalist and author who covered Stalin's gulags, Nazi Germany, and Jewish refugees. She often acted not only as an observer but also a human rights advocate. She was a correspondent in Europe and the Middle East and wrote 19 books. She escorted nearly 1,000 refugees from Nazi-occupied nations to the US in a trans-Atlantic crossing in 1944. They included the only large contingent of Jews allowed into America during World War II.
