Voltaire (French writer, historian, and philosopher, 1694-1778)

Note: A figure crucial to the Age of Enlightenment, known for his antipathy towards tyranny, bigotry, and cruelty. Using wit and satire, he advocated civil liberties, including freedom of religion, freedom of expression, free trade and separation of church and state. He was prolific and produced work in almost every literary form. He is perhaps best known for his satirical work, Candide. |
