Araujo, Emanoel (Brazilian painter, draftsman, and graphic artist, born 1940)

Note: Emanoel Alves de Araújo learned carpentry with the master Eufrásio Vargas and worked with Linotype and graphic composition at the Official Press in Santo Amaro da Purificação, Bahia. During the 1960s, he moved to Salvador, Bahia, and entered the School of Fine Arts of the Universidade Federal da Bahia - UFBA [Federal University of Bahia], where he studied engraving with Henrique Oswald (1918 - 1965). In 1972, he won the gold medal at the 3rd Graphic Biennale in Florence, Italy. In the following year, he won the prize of best engraver, and in 1983, of best sculptor, from the Associação Paulista dos Críticos de Arte (APCA) [São Paulo Association of Art Critics]. Between 1981 and 1983, he established and directed the Museum of Art of Bahia, in Salvador, exhibiting individually at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand (Masp) [Assis Chateaubriand Museum of Art of São Paulo]. In 1988, he was invited to lecture in graphic arts and sculpture at the Arts College of the City University of New York. From 1992 to 2002, he was the director of the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo (Pesp) [State Art Gallery of São Paulo] and was responsible for the revitalisation of the institution. From 1995 to 1996, he was a guest member of the Museums Commission And of the Federal Council of Cultural Policy, established by the Ministry of Culture. In 2004, he became the curator and director of the Afro-Brazil Museum, opened in this year, in São Paulo with works from his collection.
