Orchard, William (English architect, died 1504)
|
Note: Orchard was the leading mason of his time in Oxford. He was master of the work at Bishop William Waynflete's Magdalen College in Oxford from 1468. His design for Magdalen College Tower (1492-1500) is based on Robert Janyns's bell tower (1448-1452) for Merton College Chapel. Documentary evidence points to him being employed at St. Frideswide's Priory Church (now Oxford Cathedral). The other major contemporary Oxford vault, that of the Oxford Divinity School (vault 1480-1483), has so many points in common with that of St. Frideswide that they are probably of the same hand. They both feature pendant drops and both are the epitome of the spiky, sharp-edged 15th-century Oxford style. The initials W. O. can be found on the richly decorated vault of the Divinity School. |
