Record Type: Person
Hewitt, William Graily (English calligrapher and illuminator, 1864-1952)

Note: A modern calligrapher, Hewitt mastered medieval calligraphy and especially gilding techniques. He was a student of Edward Johnston. As early as 1904 Hewitt thought about setting up a cooperative scriptorium on medieval lines, a goal which seems to have been fulfilled in his work to produce memorials for those who died in World War I. He sought to produce work that was technically perfect rather than artistically inventive. He often collaborated with Ida Henstock.
