Sangallo, Antonio da, the younger (Italian architect and military engineer, 1484-1546)
|
Note: Son of Antonio Cordiani and Smeralda Giamberti, a sister of Giuliano da Sangallo and Antonio da Sangallo the Elder. Antonio da Sangallo the Younger dominated the architectural scene in Rome during the second quarter of the sixteenth century. Probably trained by his uncles, he was taken by Giuliano to Rome around 1503. By his mid-thirties, Antonio the Younger had acquired practical experience on a variety of building projects under the leading masters of the High Renaissance (including Bramante and Raphael). Around 1515, he became the personal architect of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese (later Pope Paul III), for whom he began the Palazzo Farnese in Rome (ca.1515 - 1546) and the fortress of Caprarola (ca. 1521 - ca. 1527), which was later transformed into a villa by Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola. Under Paul III, he became a leading expert and practitioner of military architecture. Italian architect, known as "the Younger". |
