Street, George Edmund (English architect, 1824-1881)

Note: From 1841 to 1843 Street was a pupil of Owen Brown Carter, architect at Winchester, and in 1844 became his assistant. The same year, he moved to London and found a place in the office of George Gilbert Scott, where he worked with George Frederick Bodley and William White. Street established his own office in 1849. Between 1852 and 1862, he trained or employed Philips S. Webb, William Morris and R. Norman Shaw. Served as diocesan architect to Oxford from 1850 until his death in 1881, as well as to York, Winchester and Ripon. Architect of the Royal Courts of Justice (original design 1866-67; completed 1882). Elected an associate of the Royal Academy in 1866 and full member in 1871. Awarded the gold medal of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1874. In 1881, served as president of the Royal Institute of British Architects and as professor of architecture at the Royal Academy. British architect.
