Record Type: Person
Armstrong, William (Canadian painter, civil engineer, photographer, 1822-1914)

Note: From the 1840s-1851, Armstrong served as an apprentice with the Midland Railway in England. He also worked as a draughtsman on several railways in the British Isles. Armstrong emigrated to Canada in 1851. Upon his arrival, he worked for the Northern Railway and the Grand Trunk Railway where he learned photography. Circa 1851, Armstrong formed the firm Armstrong & Beere with Daniel Manders Beere. The Toronto firm of photographers, engineers and draughtsmen hired Humphrey Lloyd Hime in 1856, and made him a partner in 1857 when the firm changed its name to Armstrong, Beere & Hime. Beere left the firm in 1863 for New Zealand and Hime left probably in 1864 to pursue a career in business.
