Note: Appointed ingénieur du roi (1663 or 1664); appointed director of the newly formed Académie Royale d'Architecture in 1671. In 1671, Blondel was in charge of the erection of the new Porte Saint-Denis, which is considered to be his masterwork, along with the restoration of the Porte Saint-Antoine and the Porte Saint-Bernard. "... it was not through his architectural works but almost exclusively through his work as a teacher and director of the Academy that Blondel was able to exert considerable influence on the development of French classical architecture."
