Malibu Painter (Egypto-Roman vase painter, active 75-100 CE in Egypt)
|
Note: The Malibu Painter painted mummy portraits in Roman province of Egypt from about 75 to 100 CE. Scholars have attributed three portraits to this artist on the basis of his handling of highlights and shadow and a distinctive form of nose and mouth. Two of these portraits were excavated at Hawara, the cemetery for nearby Arsinoe, the main city in the Fayum, where the Malibu Painter presumably worked. As with most ancient artists, the true name of the Malibu Painter is unknown; his work is identified only by stylistic traits. He takes his name from the portrait of a woman in the Getty Museum. |
