Shearer, John (American photographer, 1947-2019)
|
Note: Known for his images of the 1960s and 1970s depicting civil rights marches, race riots and the funeral of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He became a staff photographer at Look magazine at 20, and was one of the few black photographers at a major publication at the time. He later worked with Gordon Parks at Life magazine. He was the only still photographer allowed by inmates to work inside the Attica Correctional Facility during the uprising there in 1971. His work has been exhibited in New York at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art. |
