Note: Son of Otto the Illustrious, the Liudolfing duke of Saxony. Duke of Saxony from 912 and the King of Germany from 919; founder of the Saxon dynasty. Known for having strengthened the East Frankish, or German, army, encouraged the growth of towns, brought Lotharingia (Lorraine) back under German control (925), and secured German borders against pagan incursions. |
