Ball, Hugo (German writer and performer, 1886-1927)
|
Note: Writer, actor, dramatist, and critic; an early critical biographer of German novelist Hermann Hesse. Ball studied sociology and philosophy at the Universities of Munich and Heidelberg (1906–07) and went to Berlin (1910) to become a theatrical producer and an actor. A pacifist, he left Germany for Switzerland with during World War I and in Zürich established the Cabaret Voltaire with Emmy Hennings, whom he later married. The Cabaret Voltaire was a performance space and public platform for the Dada movement, of which Ball was a founder. They were joined by Huelsenbeck, Hans Arp, Marcel Janco and Tristan Tzara. Ball broke with the Dadaists in 1917. |
