Note: Archbishop of Parma and cardinal; diplomat, and a great collector and patron of the arts. Grandson of Pope Paul III (Alessandro Farnese I), and the son of Pier Luigi Farnese, Duke of Parma. Important patron of the arts active in Rome; his large collection of antiquities is now in Naples. Patron of Titian and Vasari; encouraged Giorgio Vasari to write "Lives of the Artists." As Cardinal-Protector of the Jesuits, he funded the building of Il Gesú. |
