Darius I, King of Persia (Persian king, 550-486 BCE)
|
Note: One of the greatest rulers of the Achaemenid dynasty, noted for his administrative genius and as an architect. Son of Hystaspes, he was a member of the royal bodyguard who gained the throne after the death of Cyrus II's son, Cambyses II. He attempted to secure Persian rule over the Asiatic Greeks through a series of military actions that eventually resulted in failure at Marathon, where the Athenians defeated the Persian forces. In 521 BCE he made Susa his administrative capital and he rebuilt the city's fortifications. |
