Record Type: Person
Burroughs, William S. (American writer and mixed-media artist, 1914-1997)

Note: American writer is known primarily for his novel "Naked Lunch," first published in 1959, and is considered one of the foundational figures of the Beat generation. His experiments with writing evolved over the course of his life. He developed several modes of composition that relied on chance juxtapositions, such as the 'cut-up' method he developed with the artist Brion Gysin. From the 1970s he became an increasingly visible figure in popular culture, appearing as a spoken word artist, film actor, and in later years, a painter. His experience of heroin addiction featured prominently in his work, particularly his early novels.
