Mánes, Josef (Czech painter and printmaker, 1820-1871)
|
Note: Studied at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts under his uncle Václav Mánes beginning in 1835. Studied in Munich 1844 to 1846, and travelled to Vienna and central Europe. His work of the 1840s shows the influence of the Romantic movement. He became a member of the Association of Fine Artists, and to the Artistic Forum (Umělecká Beseda). He supported the independence movement and was among the first Bohemian painters to turn to folkloric motifs and subjects. He created a series of studies of Slavonic national costumes, and illustrated folk songs while travelling in Poland, Silesia, Moravia and Slovakia. In the 1850s he worked on designs for industrial and applied art, and bookbindings. He created large-scale works such as figural medallions for the church of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Karlín, and for the Old Town Hall clock in Prague (1865).He was influential to the generation of artists of the 1890s, including Alphonse Mucha.
