Note: Town in the northern Czech Republic which, during World War II, was a Nazi-established "camp-ghetto" for Jews. The town served as a transit-camp for Czech Jews who were to be deported to concentration or extermination camps in German-occupied territories. It also served as a ghetto, a labor camp, and a holding pen for Jews in general, in squalid conditions. Approximately 140,000 Jews were transported to Terezín, with 90,000 being deported to certain death in other camps. Approximately 33,000 died at Terezín itself. The camp was liberated the camp in early May, 1945. A memorial now exists at the original site.
