Note: The city of Plzeň is situated in fertile Plzeň basin in Západočeský region, of which it is the capital city, in the Czech Republic. It lies along the old trade route between Prague and Bavaria, and its existence was first recorded in the 10th century. It. was chartered in 1292 and fortified by King Wenceslaus II in 1295. It served as a stronghold for the Roman Catholic Church during 1the 5th-century Hussite Wars. Though heavily damaged in World War II, it still retains many historic structures, including its medieval town square with St. Bartholomew's Church, the Franciscan Church of the Virgin Mary, and its Renaissance town hall and burger houses. The modern city is known for the long-operating Škoda Steel Works, in production since the late 19th century, producing heavy machinery, aircraft, locomotives, and cars. In addition, the city has been known for its Pilsner beer since medieval times. Its 2003 estimated population was 164,900. |
