Note: Situated in southwestern Spain, Badajoz is on the south bank of the Guadiana River. The city was founded by the Romans and later prospered under the control of the Moors. In 1229, Badajoz was taken from the Moors by Alfonso IX of León. It is was strategically important during the Peninsular War of 1811-1812 and the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939. It is the birthplace of statesman Manuel Godoy and conquistador Manuel de Alvarado. The primary industries in Badajoz are food processing, production of alcoholic beverages, basketwork, blankets, and wax. |
