Note: The small northwestern German city of Wesel is situated on the Rhine and Lippe rivers and the Lippe Seiten canal at the mouth of the Lippe river in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. There is evidence of human settlement since the 8th century. Chartered in 1241, it became an important medieval commercial and cultural center, due to its location at important trade and shipping point. It joined the Hanseatic League ca. 1350 and prospered. It went to Brandenburg in 1667, and served as a garrison town until 1918. It was the site of many military encounters during the Napoleonic Wars, 1808-1814. In 1945 it was the point where the Allies crossed the Rhine. Heavy aerial bombardment in World War II practically destroyed the entire city, but a few medieval buildings survive, including its 17th-century citadel. The city has been planned and rebuilt in a modern style. It is a major inland harbor and industrial site, known for its metal products, as well as a center of business. Its estimated population for 204 was 62,200. |
