Note: The small northwestern German city of Bocholt is situated on the Aa river in a forest of beech trees near the German-Netherlands border. The bishop of M ünster chartered it in 1222. Its historic architecture includes the Gothic church of St. George built1415-1486, the Renaissance town hall of 1618-1621, which was restored in 1928-1934, and the two castles of Anholt and Gemen. The city was heavily damaged in World War II, but was rebuilt and has grown, particularly in the 1970s when it annexed a few neighboring towns and grew by more than 30%. It is a textile production center, especially for cotton, and manufactures machine work and iron goods. The population estimate for 2004 was 73,200.
