Note: Fishing village and popular family vacation spot; on the site of an ancient town in East or Opuntian Lokris, on the eastern shore of the bay referred to by Strabo (9.4.2) as the Opuntian Gulf and called in modern times the bay of Atalanti. Was heavily fortified; had Neolithic & Bronze Age settlements; possibly was a stronghold of the notorious Lokrian pirates in Iron Age; was badly damaged in great earthquakes of 426-425 BCE. |
