Note: Dutch colony in Southeast Asia, active from the late 15th century until the country of Indonesia formed and gained independence in 1949. Dutch colonial territory expanded throughout the 19th and early 20th century. From 1942-1945, the Dutch East Indies was occupied by the Japanese. After World War II and the Japanese surrender, the Dutch attempted to regain control of the colony, leading to the Indonesian National Revolution, and the Dutch recognized the country's sovereignty in 1949, with the exception of Netherlands New Guinea, which was incorporated into Indonesia in 1962. |
