Note: The county commune of Sønderjylland was created in 1970 from the former counties of Tønder, Haderslev, and Abenrå-Sønderborg, measuring some 1517 square miles in all. It incorporated the historical region of North Slesvig, a possession of Germany from 1864 to 1920. Agriculture and dairying were the important economic activities throughout the county. It contained the famous Moravian bakery, cemetery, and museum. The county seat was at Åbenrå. The 2004 population estimate was 252,500. In 2007, all counties in Denmark were eliminated and five large regions created. |
